Land Rover were late in recognising the potential of the mid-sized sector of the four-wheel drive market. For years, the Solihull companies Range Rover and Land Rover products catered only for luxury sector and utilitarian buyers; if you simply wanted a spacious 4x4 for the family, you were out of luck. When it was launched in 1989, the Discovery changed all that.

Since then, the car has consistently been one of the off-road market's strongest sellers. Few will have seen any serious off road use and all are built stoutly. Looking at the values of the three-door Range Rovers then these vehicles seem to be next in line to appreciate in value and could form a very sensible investment decision.

The early choice was limited to the three-door bodyshell with either a 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine or a 3.5-litre V8. Over 90% of buyers then (and now) opted for diesel power - the petrol unit was prohibitively thirsty.

Purchased in 2014 by the current owner at 111,000 miles this lovely manual gearbox 3 door Discovery 2.5 TDI has undergone a sympathetic restoration during 2015 and 2016 which included a full respray, new vehicle graphics, some minor chassis repairs, a full re-waxoyl. (It was fitted with inner and outer sills and a rear floor panel previously in 2011).

Mechanically it has just been fully serviced at 117,000 and was fitted with a new cam belt in October 2015 at 112,000 miles

The Sonar Blue Interior is largely untouched and presents very well. There is some tidying required to the seat base runners but this is purely cosmetic and not structural.

On the road this Discovery drives really well, the gearbox is nice and tight, the transmission free from any of the usual clunks and bumps, it is evident that this vehicle has been regularly maintained. The recent MOT pass showing a clean sheet with no partials.

The complete original book pack is present along with the full history initially stamped and latterly written into the service book whenever any work has taken place. It gives a great picture to what has clearly been a pampered and loved vehicle.

As indicated earlier, if the early Range Rover values are anything to go by then this Discovery 1 must surely be an investment alert for anyone who wants a use and improve vehicle to enjoy and show in the future or just simply lock away – the choice is yours!
